Maxwell Air Force Base

The historical town of Montgomery, Alabama is home to one of our nation's most prestigious air force bases, the Maxwell Air Force Base. Officially named the Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, it is the home of the Air University, an important constituent of the Air Education and Training Command. Way back in 1910, the Wright brothers opened one of the worlds first flying schools, and that eventually became the Maxwell AF Base. During the First World War, the base was used as a repair depot for planes. To add to its illustrious past, in 1929, Maxwell AFB planes were the first planes ever to air-drop supplies and food during a civilian emergency. In addition to the Air University, Maxwell AFB is the US Air Force's center for Professional Military Education and the Officer Training School. The base is home to the 42d Air Base Wing, the USAF Reserve 908th Airlift Wing and the 357th Airlift Squadron. You will find some of the friendliest people at this base, and have the opportunity to witness amazing air shows and parachutists in action. Further, there is an impressive display of aircraft, such as the C-130 Hercules, and military equipment.
Maxwell AFB was built for the tourist with such attractions as a bowling alley, an auto hobby shop, a golf course, outdoor swimming pools and a great sports center. It is an enormous base, crammed full of activities like hiking and hunting. If fishing is your passion, you've come to the right place. There are two base lakes, one measuring half an acre and bursting with bass, crappie, shell-cracker, catfish and brim.
